Diverse Students, Emerging Technologies, and a Sustainability Challenge
Technology integration has become a focal point for school districts around the region as they strive to incorporate 21st Century learning experiences in every classroom. The 2008 Summer Institute, sponsored by Model Schools and the Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant, aims to demonstrate ways that teachers can do this efficiently and effectively. Specific attention will be given to the area of online learning, which is merging traditional teaching methods with 21st century skills.
We encourage you to be in attendance both days as workshops will cover topics such as formative assessment, internet safety, online education, Web 2.0 tools and more.
A highlight of this year's event will be the keynote speech, given by Dr. Mark David Milliron, President and CEO of Catalyze Learning International. Dr. Milliron is an award-winning leader, author, speaker, and consultant best known for exploring leadership development trends, learning strategies, and the human side of technology change. Mark works with universities, community colleges, K-12 schools, corporations, associations, and government agencies across the country and around the world. LEGO Robotics Workshop
On Thursday, August 16th, 9 teachers from area districts participated in a full-day regional Model Schools workshop on LEGO Robotics at the Madison-Oneida BOCES campus. Lego Robotics provides a medium to expose students to engineering design and computer programming. Using LEGO Mindstorms NXT Robotics kits and LEGO Mindstorms Education software, the workshop participants built their own robots and then programmed them to move and react to input received through the onboard sound, light, ultrasonic and touch sensors. Resources were also shared on how to integrate LEGO Robotics into the Math, Science and Technology curriculum. Participating school districts included Camden, Ilion, Clinton, Owen D. Young and Lowville.

Morrisville-Eaton and Video Streaming
On May 16, 2007,Morrisville-Eaton Central School District worked in conjunction with the Mohawk Regional Information Center to provide a unique experience for the Morrisville-Eaton staff, students, families, friends and community. Through the use of video streaming technology, people from across the country and around the world were able to watch the Morrisville-Eaton Spring Chorus Concert. The concert was streamed live over the Internet on the night of the event. Following the concert, a taping of the concert was linked to the school
The technology enabled family members living outside of New York State to view the concert from their computers as the event took place. Additionally, local community members were able to watch the concert from the comfort of their homes while attending to other responsibilities.
As the concert included a series of patriotic and military songs, Scott Smilinich, a Morrisville teacher currently serving in Iraq, was able to listen to the tunes with members of his unit. As a result of the time difference, Scott was unable to watch the concert live. However, he and his unit were able to view a streamed version of the concert the following day.
The day after the concert, the student body and staff were excitedly sharing their experiences. They are excited to see how this technology can be used to enhance and share future school events with a larger audience.
